Pirated or Original Books
Book is one of major property for student to support learning process. However, piracy of books is getting worse and worse. As the piracy of book is spreading out, the student gets dilemma to choose pirated or original books. Actually, using the pirated books is normal for most of the student. There are a lot of reasons why most of student using pirated books. The question arising from this case are, is it good or bad? Is there any solution for student to get course resources without using pirated books? This essay will reveal the reason why student tends to choose pirated books rather than the original one. Therefore, it is important to find out the problem backgrounds and the solution for students regarding their use of pirated books.

Basic problem of most students in the world, especially college students is economic problem and that is why they use pirated books rather than the original ones. There are a lot of needs that must be fulfilled by students, such as tuition, housing costs, books, daily needs and so on. Robin McDanielv (2011) said that according to a student-aid study cited by the American Council on Education website, debt levels start in the $5,000 range for community college students. By this case, students may feel burdened if they have to buy original books for their college.
All students in the world may agree that students have huge needs for their college, but the ability to fulfill those needs depend on the economic statues of each student. Student whose parent is in high social class may have no problem to fulfill their needs for school. However, not all students have parents with high social class. There are a number of students whose parents are middle or even lower class and cannot buy original books as high class student do. That is the fact how individual statues of student influence to their capability to fulfill their needs.
Beside student economic problem, there are also English book resources as one of problem in this case. The scarcity of book resources in bookstore can disrupt student learning process, especially for English student. Even there are English book resources in bookstore, the price is very expensive. How student can’t afford to buy pirated books if the prices are far more expensive than the original ones. The price of English textbook is about Rp 200.000 while the pirated ones is Rp 50.000. It is the fact that must be faced by students.
Book piracy in Indonesia has been existed for long time ago. Although the regulation of piracy and copyright has been stated in UUD No. 19 2002 Pasal 12, ayat 1 :Dalam Undang-undang ini Ciptaan yang dilindungi adalah Ciptaan dalam bidang ilmu pengetahuan, seni, dan sastra, yang mencakup: buku, Program Komputer, pamflet, perwajahan (lay out) karya tulis yang diterbitkan, dan semua hasil karya tulis lain”. In  UUD No. 19 2002 pasal 15 also listed a parameter of piracy:Perbanyakan suatu Ciptaan selain Program Komputer, secara terbatas dengan cara atau alat apa pun atau proses yang serupa oleh perpustakaan umum, lembaga ilmu pengetahuan atau pendidikan, dan pusat dokumentasi yang nonkomersial semata-mata untuk keperluan aktivitasnya.” the doer of the piracy seems have no fear and keep pirating all kind of books. In 2003 PPB team (Pemberantasan Pembajakan Buku) Ikapi and police officer of East Jakarta made sweeping act to all bookstores there. They found 2.000 exemplars of pirated books.   However, this case never comes to the court because the attorney still consulting this case to the Kejati of DKI Jakarta. It proofs how weak Indonesian attention for this case is.
There are criminal sanctions for making or dealing with articles which infringe copyright. The criminal provisions and penalties for commercial copyright piracy have been made more severe as a result of the growth in national and international piracy of copyright material. Penalties range from imprisonment for up to two years. The civil courts, in response to growing copyright piracy, have also been prepared to grant to copyright owners what in practice are private search warrants to track down the sources for bootleg (sell pirated book free) operations.
Since the using of pirated book is illegal, student should be tricky to solve their dilemma whether they choose pirated or original books. The students may use library facility in finding book resources. Reading book in library also has own weakness which are feel of bored and incomplete book resources. Other way, student can borrow books from the senior. However, if student want to get original book, they can buy some used books from the bookstore. For alternatives, student may use modern technology such as internet to get course resources for more effective and efficient. Anyway, students have to browse legally and not use the internet as a shortcut to do plagiarism.
